Description: An oblique view aerial reconnaissance photograph of the Japanese world war two airdrome at Gasmata in West New Britain Province. The view is from east to west and Thilenius Harbour and Gasmata Island can be seen. The pre-war european settlement was on Gasmata Island but after the war a patrol post and other facilities were established beside the airdrome. A number of wartime japanese aircraft wrecks can still be seen in the vicinity of the airdrome.

The air base was not used for any length of time. The nearby volcane has since obliterated a lot of the original features.

Rapopo Gazelle Peninsula WW2 airfield

Description: An aerial photograph taken from a 5th U.S.A.A.F. aircraft, most likely a P38 lightning[F5] over the former Japanses army air base at Rapopo. You drive accross the old main runway when you travel between Tokua airport and Kokopo. Up untill the early 1980's Rapopo could be considered as one of the better preserved and easily accessable Japanese wartime aerodromes as all the aircraft revetments were untouched and there were numerous aircraft powerplants and other bits and pieces of aircraft types lying about . There were even a few of the old servicing vehicles to be seen but THEN someone decided that the area had to be redeveloped for cocoa replanting so most everything was shoved into bomb craters and buried and the old revetments and other earthworks bulldozed. In the photograph a number of abandoned aircraft can be seen. Cna you you pick the different models??.

Description: Martin B26 "Marauder" ser # 40-1418 of 33 BS 22BG 5 USAAF. This aircraft in which Squadron Leader Charles R.Gurney RAAF was the co-pilot crashed in a swampy area with the gear down and went over on the nose killing both Gurney and the pilot a 1st Lt Herron.The rest of the crew got out. 2nd May 1942.

Description: Aerial recon' photograph of kavieng aerodrome after considerable development by the JNAF in WW2. Few if any relics of the many japanese aircraft destroyed on this base are to be seen. Most war surplus material is and around the Kavieng precinct was salvaged and scrapped by Mr Harry Croydon in the immediate post war years. In the late 70's the author located the tail wheel group of a G4m1 "betty", near the then DCA compound.

Description: High altitude aerial photograph of Vunakunau Aerodrome.The major airbase in the Rabaul area for the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Force. Taken from a B17"Flying Fortress" of the 19th Bomb group [heavy]. This was one of the early raids flown from Australia via Port Moresby. One b17 was lost on this day.
